PERFECTION OF MAGIC
("MAGIC")

SHE WAS A GORGEOUS BLACK MARE WITH A LONG, FLOWING MANE
AND SMOOTH GAITS THAT MADE RIDING A BREEZE.
HER HEAD WAS SO PRETTY, AND SHE DID HAVE KIND EYES.
BUT - HUMANS, SHE DID NOT WANT TO PLEASE.

SHE WAS BOUGHT SIGHT UNSEEN BECAUSE SHE WAS IN FOAL
TO THE PHENOMENAL "THE PUSHER" C.G.
THE SIGHT OF HER REARING IN CROSS-TIES
WAS THE FIRST OF MANY WORRISOME THINGS TO ME.

BECAUSE I WAS TOLD SHE WAS A MARE I SHOULD BUY,
SHE WAS LOADED AND CAME HOME TO THE FARM..
I HAD NO IDEA ABOUT THE TROUBLE AHEAD, OR
HOW MANY PEOPLE SHE WOULD EVENTUALLY HARM.

IT WAS MY FIRST EXPERIENCE WITH A DIFFICULT HORSE,
AND IT MADE CARING FOR HER NOT VERY MUCH FUN.
I ALWAYS BREATHED A LONG SIGH OF RELIEF
WHEN FEEDING AND CLEANING HER STALL WAS ALL DONE.

AND CATCHING HER - WELL, NOW, WAS THAT EVER A CHORE,
BUT ON OCCASION IT WAS SOMETHING I JUST NEEDED TO DO.
ONCE I WENT INTO HER STALL WITH A WHIP UNDER MY ARM,
AND SUDDENLY THINGS BECAME CLEAR AND I KNEW:

MAGIC DIDN'T TRUST HUMANS, MAYBE BECAUSE THEY WEREN'T KIND,
AND AS A RESULT SHE HAD LEARNED TO BE AFRAID.
PERHAPS SOMEONE JUST DIDN'T TAKE EXTRA TIME
TO UNDERSTAND JUST EXACTLY HOW SHE WAS MADE.

WELL, MAGIC WAS SOLD - I REALLY WANTED HER TO BE GONE.
I DID NOT EVER WANT TO SEE HER BACK ON THE PLACE.
IT WAS SO FRUSTRATING TO TRY TO MAKE PEACE
WITH THE UGLY MARE WITH THE BEAUTIFUL FACE.

MAGIC DID PRODUCE A BEAUTIFUL AND TALENTED FILLY.
A FILLY THAT GREW UP TO SHOW EXTREMELY WELL.
JUST ABOUT THE TIME I WAS SORRY THAT I SOLD THE MARE,
HER NEW OWNERS WERE VERY READY TO SELL.

SO BACK SHE CAME - THE PLAN WAS TO BREED HER AGAIN,
AND SHE WOULD PRODUCE ANOTHER FIRST-CLASS FOAL.
I PROMISED HER THEN SHE WOULD HAVE GOOD CARE AND A HOME,
BUT ANYTHING MORE WAS NEVER A GOAL.

THEN A LADY WHO LIKED HORSES CAME ONE DAY TO THE FARM;
SHE SAID SHE LIKED TO RIDE, AND SO SHE WAS HIRED.
OF ALL OF THE HORSES THAT SHE WAS AROUND,
MAGIC WAS THE ONE SHE LOVED AND ADMIRED.

THERE WAS NO VERTICAL MOVEMENT EXCEPT MAGIC'S HEAD
NODDING IN TIME WITH EACH RHYTHMICAL STRIDE.
IT REALLY WAS POETRY IN MOTION TO SEE THE TWO OF THEM
PERFORMING THAT BEAUTIFUL GLIDING RIDE.

AND SO THAT BEGAN THE RELATIONSHIP -
DIFFICULT MAGIC AND THE QUIET AND GENTLE LYNN.
AS TIME PASSED, THE BOND BETWEEN THEM GREW,
AND THE SITUATION BECAME A WIN - WIN!

IT SEEMS THAT ALL THINGS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE,
AND WITH LYNN'S LOVE MAGIC BEGAN TO COME AROUND.
THE DISDAIN FOR HUMANS THAT HAD BEEN THERE SO LONG
BEGAN TO BE ALMOST NOWHERE TO BE FOUND.

THERE JUST WAS NOT ANY DOUBT AS TIME CONTINUED TO PASS
THAT MAGIC WAS OFF IN ANOTHER DIRECTION.
SHE HAD CHOSEN LYNN, JUST AS LYNN HAD PICKED HER.
THE PAPERWORK JUST NEEDED CORRECTION.

MAGIC WAS BRED EARLY IN FEBRUARY ABOUT TWO YEARS AGO
TO OUR WONDERFUL COIN'S AMBER FLAME.
MAGIC HAD ALWAYS HAD SUCH TALENTED KIDS,
WE WERE ANTICIPATING MORE OF THE SAME.

IT WOULD BE THE FIRST FOAL THAT WAS LYNN'S VERY OWN,
AND SHE PAMPERED AND DOTED ON HER MARE.
MAGIC ATE APPLES, RECEIVED LONG LOVING MASSAGE,
IN EVERY WAY SHE HAD THE BEST OF CARE.

JANUARY TWO THOUSAND AND TWO -
THREE MARES WERE GETTING READY TO FOAL.
MAGIC WOULD BE FIRST, THEN GALE FORCE AND DOC:
THREE LIVE, HEALTHY BABIES WAS THE GOAL.

MAGIC KNEW THE ROUTINE - SHE HAD BEEN THERE BEFORE.
SHE WAS STRONG AND EVERYTHING WAS GOING OKAY.
SHE WAS CHECKED EVERY HOUR ALL THROUGH THE NIGHT,
YET THINGS SEEMED TO BE DIFFERENT SOMEWAY.

THEN IT WAS LYNN'S TURN TO CHECK ON HER MARE.
SHE WENT TO THE BARN AS SHE HAD DONE ALL ALONG.
WHEN I SAW HER COME RUNNING BACK DOWN THE ROAD,
IT WAS OBVIOUS SOMETHING WAS TERRIBLY WRONG.

MAGIC HAD DELIVERED A VERY LARGE BEAUTIFUL BOY.
HE WAS CLEANED UP, STANDING THERE BY HER SIDE,
BUT THE MARE WAS DOWN, AND WHEN LYNN GOT BACK TO THE BARN,
MAGIC BREATHED HER LAST BREATH, THEN SHE DIED.

BY THE TIME THE VET GOT THERE, OF COURSE MAGIC WAS GONE,
BUT HER FOAL WAS ALERT AND ALIVE.
MAGIC'S UTERINE ARTERY HAD BURST,
YET, SHE HAD SEEN TO IT HER COLT WOULD SURVIVE.

MAGIC TAUGHT US SO MUCH ABOUT WHAT LOVE CAN DO;
WITH LYNN SHE HAD FOUND HER APPOINTED PLACE.
SHE LEARNED SHE COULD TRUST AND IN HER LAST YEARS,
HER HEART GREW TO MATCH HER BEAUTIFUL FACE.
