GALE FORCE

Gale Force with Muffin

SHE WAS FIFTEEN MONTHS OLD WHEN SHE CAME INTO MY LIFE,
THE BLACK FILLY WITH SUCH CLASS AND GRACE.
HER PRETTY LONG NECK SET OFF AN ELEGANT HEAD
AND ALL OF HER PARTS WERE IN THE RIGHT PLACE.

WHEN SHE WAS DELIVERED TO MY TRAINER, HE GAVE ME A CALL
TO SAY THAT SHE HAD ARRIVED SAFELY FROM TENNESSEE.
I RUSHED DOWN TO SEE HER - I JUST COULD NOT WAIT.
WE WOULD HAVE SUCH FUN - THIS FILLY AND ME.

LIKE I SAID, SHE WAS PRETTY - AND SHE THOUGHT SO TOO.
SHE EXUDED BOTH CONFIDENCE AND PRIDE.
SHE CARRIED HERSELF WITH HER HEAD IN THE AIR,
AND IT NODDED WITH EACH LENGTHY STRIDE.

I TOOK HER IN HAND AND HEADED OUT TO THE TRUCK
TO LOAD HER FOR THE TRIP HOME AND INTO MY HEART.
HOWEVER, FRANK SAID, "YOU CAN'T TAKE HER HOME -
THIS FILLY IS READY TO START."

SO, START HER HE DID, AND SHE WAS EAGER TO WORK.
WITH THAT, HER SHOW CAREER HAD BEGUN.
AS I WATCHED EVERY CLASS, MY EYES NEVER LEFT HER.
YOU SEE, I ALWAYS THOUGHT SHE HAD WON.

THE FIRST TIME SHE WON A BLUE RIBBON,
SHE DID IT WITH ELEGANCE AND FLAIR -
I THOUGHT I WOULD BE SICK WHEN FRANK ASKED ME.
"DO YOU WANT TO SELL YOUR MARE?"

THE SHOW SEASON PROGRESSED, AND THE BLACK MARE DID TOO,
AND THE OFFERS KEPT COMING IN.
"I DIDN'T BUY HER TO SELL", I SAID MANY TIMES,
I LOVED WATCHING HER PERFORM, AND THEN WIN.

AND THEN SHE WAS THREE - AND THE PRESSURE TO SELL
MADE ME DECIDE TO JUST BRING HER BACK TO THE FARM.
NOW I COULD HAVE MY BEAUTIFUL GIRL,
AND SHE WOULD BE SAFE FROM SALE AND ALL HARM.

IT WAS A WONDERFUL YEAR - I COULD RIDE HER A BIT,
AND SHE GOT TO BE A 4-H HORSE FOR A LITTLE FRIEND.
SHE WAS THE QUEEN OF THE BARN - AND SO MUCH FUN,
BUT IT WAS SAD THAT HER SHOWING DID END.

SHE WAS BRED AND THE NEXT YEAR HAD A BEAUTIFUL COLT.
NINETEEN NINETY-FOUR STARTED OUT GREAT.
BUT FOUR MONTHS LATER THERE WAS AN ACCIDENT,
AND NO WAY TO BE SURE OF HER FATE.

IT WAS ONE OF THOSE FREAK THINGS THAT NEVER HAPPENS AT ALL.
THE FARRIER WAS RESETTING HER SHOE.
SHE BECAME STARTLED, KICKED OUT AT HIS STAND,
AND CUT HER LEG NEARLY IN TWO.

THERE WAS BLOOD EVERYWHERE; IT SEEMED LIKE A BAD DREAM,
I CALLED THE VET AND PRAYED HARD AS I COULD.
A TOURNIQUET WAS APPROPRIATELY APPLIED,
AND THE VET DID ALL THAT SHE SHOULD.

MY THREE-LEGGED MARE GOT INTO THE TRAILER WITH EASE,
AND WE HEADED TO THE VET SCHOOL AT OSU.
I KNOW THERE WERE ANGELS LEADING THE WAY
BECAUSE WE HAD ALL GREEN LIGHTS TO GO THROUGH.

THE PROGNOSIS WAS GRIM, THEY DID NOT OFFER MUCH HOPE.
EVERYTHING IN A LEG THAT COULD HAD GONE WRONG.
ED SCOTT WAS HER DOCTOR, AND HE SAID THEY WOULD TRY
BUT THE ROAD COULD BE UNCERTAIN AND LONG.

THERE WERE ALL KINDS OF CASTS, SOME WERE SHORT, SOME WERE LONG.
THERE WERE SURGERIES AND TREATMENTS TO DO.
AS THE MONTHS PASSED, AND AS THINGS PROGRESSED.
IT LOOKED LIKE SHE MIGHT MAKE IT THROUGH.

IT TOOK A YEAR AND A HALF, FOURTEEN SCREWS AND A PLATE,
BUT MY BEAUTIFUL MARE WAS BACK ON HER FEET.
I LOVE HER SO MUCH; SHE IS A THRILL TO MY HEART.
SEEING HER MAKES EACH DAY COMPLETE.

WELL, THAT WAS NINETEEN NINETY-FOUR. NOW IT IS TWO THOUSAND THREE.
SHE HAS JUST PRODUCED FOAL NUMBER FIVE.
SHE RUNS AND SHE PLAYS WITH HARDLY A LIMP.
SHE IS HEALTHY AND JUST SEEMS TO THRIVE.

THIS DAUGHTER OF "PRIDE'S DARK SPIRIT"
HAS AS MUCH STRENGTH AND HEART AS ANY HORSE.
SHE IS TRULY A WALKING MIRACLE -
SHE LIVES UP TO HER NAME, "GALE FORCE".
